Stacey Hartley
What course did you study and when?
I studied the 3 Day Introduction to Floristry in December 2021 and then had a 1-2-1 with Rachel in July 2022.
What did you enjoy most about the course?
Honestly, everything! But, I love the creative and exploratory way that Rachel taught us. No judgement, just guidance and positive support and assistance with making us feel we were creating something beautiful. It was also really lovely how much we all became a group even just over the three days. It felt like we created our own support system for one another and that has continued ever since.
Where are you now in your floristry journey?
I am currently three years into having my floristry business and it’s now my full-time job! I’m at a stage of growth where I feel I can and want to expand the business which is both amazing and scary. Having recently had a little boy, I’ve taken some time out and been able to see how far I’ve come and also what I really love doing and what doesn’t serve me anymore, so I’m at a really exciting stage.
What is the best part of having a floristry business?
Honestly, the fact that no two days are ever the same and there are always new things to do. I’ve always wanted something that is challenging and exciting in equal measures and it’s definitely that. It’s so beautiful to work with flowers and be creatively guided by and inspired by the seasons. Working on my own schedule and deciding what to do each day is quite special. Plus, that feeling that you get when you’ve given someone a creation of yours or when someone is so pleased with what they’ve created at a workshop is amazing. It definitely makes everything worthwhile and is absolutely one of my favourite parts.
What is the best piece of advice Rachel gave you:
To believe in myself and my ability. To also stay in your own lane. I think they go hand in hand! Having previously been a dancer and performer, I’ve always been aware of what other people are doing and everything always felt like it was a race or a competition. I am surrounded by florists where I’m located which can be very tough, but I don’t believe that there should be competition with anyone else – Knowing who I am, what I create and how I work has really helped me to stop always looking around and focus on my business.
Why is floristry important to you?
It honestly brings me to life! I’ve always felt at home, at my happiest and my best when surrounded by nature and being able to work with flowers and nature has brought such joy to my life. I want to show as many people as possible the joy and power that flowers can have on us and how we can benefit from them in some way. Seeing people come to life when they attend one of my workshops is the loveliest feeling. Seeing the change in people from start to finish is incredible and I think that’s one of the many reasons why floristry is so important.
Is there an opportunity that springs to mind that Tallulah gave you the confidence to pursue?
Yes, I’ve exhibited at the RHS Tatton Flower Show two years in a row now and I wouldn’t have had the confidence to apply for that without the knowledge from Rachel and the courses. Rachel always said that there is never anything to lose so I applied in 2023 and got accepted which was incredible. I felt like I had the background knowledge to create what I did and could trust myself. That year my exhibit ended up being featured on Gardeners World! Then I got accepted again in 2024 and Rachel gave me some amazing advice on the logistics and mechanics. I also had the help of a fellow Tallulah on this exhibit which was so beautiful to have that support and be able to share the experience.
What is your favourite British flower and why?
I really love a Scabious which might be a unique choice. They’re just so fascinating, come in stunning colours and grow so tall! They’re one of my absolute favourites for creating bounce in a bridal bouquet.
