Student Stories

Florist / Grower – Gouldberry

Lucy Gould

Which course did you study and when?

I studied the new Online Career Change Course in January 2025.

What did you enjoy most about the course?

I really enjoyed the in-depth tutorials with Rachel. I have revisited them several times and find it so useful to have them to refer back to! I particularly enjoyed the buttonhole tutorials on how to wire flowers in different ways and also the tutorials on the larger installations, which has been invaluable in helping me in the work I have done this year.

What has been your most memorable moment since finishing the course?

I took on my largest wedding to date this year, following completing the course, which included creating hanging hoops, a floating flower wall and a broken arch installation at the church. It was a huge ‘pinch me’ moment as I never dreamed of being able to take on a wedding of that size before!

What is the best part of having your own floristry business?

I love the freedom of being able to take on the projects that I feel drawn to and I love how I can make my business work around family life so that I can be there for my children. I have also always enjoyed being creative and owning my own floristry business is such a creative outlet for me.

Are you seeing the financial return to your business that you had hoped for when investing in training?

Since completing the course, I have felt able to take on larger/ more complex projects, which in turn has led to greater financial return, which I know will continue to grow. I recently moved location but I think completing the course with Tallulah Rose in the meantime helped me to get a firmer grip on my business and therefore establish my business in my new location with greater confidence and quicker than I would have otherwise.

What’s the best piece of advice Rachel gave you?

Oh my goodness, hard to choose! But I definitely found the advice on branding and how to create your brand so helpful.

What would you say makes your floristry business unique?

I’m not sure I am unique, but I aim to be sustainable and to use British grown flowers as much as I can. My style is relaxed, seasonal and what I would like to call ‘artfully dishevelled’! I love the small details and choosing flowers and foliage for their scent, which I think helps to make flowers unique and is what the customers will remember the most in the years to come.

Is there an opportunity that springs to mind that Tallulah Rose  gave you the confidence to pursue?

I absolutely would not have had the confidence to take on some of the larger weddings I have done this year without having done the course with Tallulah Rose! The knowledge I gained from the tutorials, I have been able to apply to different scenarios, such as creating floral hoops. I also can’t imagine that I would have had the confidence to take on freelance florists prior to the course – the feeling of knowing what I am doing has given me confidence in all areas of my business.

What advice would you give to younger self starting out on your floristry journey?

I wish I had done this course sooner and I would tell my younger self to have just done it! I had completed other smaller courses before and a lot of what I knew was self-taught, which led me to have massive imposter syndrome – something I no longer have (so much!) since completing this more in-depth course.

What is your favourite British flower that you grow and why?

So many!! But if I had to choose one, it would be roses, I just can’t get enough of the scent of a good British grown rose! My absolute favourite is Chandos Beauty.
