4 week career change course 2025

Read how our 4 week career change course is changing for 2025…

Looking forward to 2025 and our intention to use solely British flowers, you will notice our 2025 course calendar will now reflect the British growing season. We have taught without floral foam, using sustainable mechanics and with British flowers for a number of years however we’re taking it one step further for 2025 and committing to using only British flowers. We have always run a 4 week career change course in June as British flowers are beautiful and plentiful however we have also run courses in March and November too. Working within the British growing season means that June will be our only 4 week course in 2025. If you’d like to enrol on this course please note there are limited places and we won’t be hosting another UK 4 week course during 2025.

We appreciate that for many of our graduate students working within the British growing season is not an option in terms of both scale and year round events. For this reason we spend time educating about working with, and buying from, international wholesalers. Understanding how you’re able to make informed decision’s when it comes to sustainability and seeking out those commercial growers investing in the future of our planet. Read on to find out more about what’s included in our 4 week course….

Our four week Career Change Course launched Tallulah Rose Flower School over a decade ago. It has been described as ‘the ultimate career change course’ and we are honoured to be referred by so many within the industry that we hold in high esteem. We have had so many amazing moments while teaching this course and are consistantly in awe of our graduate students success. Visit our Student Story  page to read more of their adventures both during their time with us and of course beyond. It goes without saying that we’re really proud to play our part.

We, and those that have gone before you understand what an exciting but terrifying moment this can be. Making a change is never easy but not making the change? Well we think that’s even harder. There is seldom a right time, let alone the perfect time to change career and we realise that for many of you this is a really big deal. We understand because we’ve done it too. We promise that we will exceed your expectations and even though you don’t realise it yet, (how could you you have too much whirling around your head!) this course will not only lead you towards a new career but in many respects a new improved you too!

Every student that walks through the door of Tallulah Rose Flower School has their own story to tell. These stories and individual  circumstances have helped us to grow and develop as teachers, enabling us to cater to your needs. Our relaxed and informal style of teaching ensures that everyone, regardless of past experience or current skill level, receives the time and attention they require to build confidence and develop their own professional style of floristry.

Our four week Career Change Course is full to bursting with both the practical and business skills you require to launch your own floristry business. Working from the basic to the advanced we take you from hand-tied bouquets through to large scale installations. It is our will that you find your own creative style of floristry and in order that we promote this within your practise you’ll find that we don’t demonstrate our designs fully. If we do this you will simply copy and be less likely to grow in confidence as quickly as we need you too. We do of course lead and guide you through your practical piece however we encourage you to find your own way resulting in a style that’s true to you. We always provide an abundance of the most beautiful British flowers. We lead the way showing you how to choose your flowers, what to look for and most importantly what they’re called! It is vital for your confidence that you choose your own flowers, we won’t be there post course to choose for you and of course it also means that your arrangements will be individual too – just like you!

Alongside the practical elements we also help you to build the skills required to start your new creative business. Included in these skills are photography, branding, marketing, social media, business start up skills and a group business coaching session. Once you have completed your course with us you are invited to join our closed Tallulah Rose Student Forum. Here you will be welcomed by former Tallulah students all willing to help and support you through those early days and beyond ! We also have a Tallulah Freelance Network page where you’ll find intern, work experience and job opportunities too.

We are often asked ‘what is the difference between the 4 and 2 week course?’ Without sounding obvious, it’s simple, we have you for two weeks longer and can therefore teach you more. The first two weeks of the 4 week course are 100% practical, week three is 100% business and week four allows time for both practical and business. During your final week with us we will recap where you feel it’s necessary, a revision day. And finally we allow time and for you to design, order, cost and produce three final pieces of your choice. This exercise allows you the opportunity of a trial run in designing and purchasing for a small event. Your work isn’t marked but as with all your work we’ll give you feedback that will enhance your practical skills allowing your confidence as a professional florist to grow. Everyone is awarded a certificate on completion of the course however as we mentioned above it’s not goodbye! Team Tallulah and our former students are always there for you as you leave the safety of school and launch your own florist business.

If you scroll down you’ll find the course schedule broken down week by week, listing all the elements the course contains. You’ll find this breakdown over on the two week course too if you’d like to compare. As always please don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any questions, we’re here on email or at the end of the phone if you prefer.

NB. All tools and equipment required to complete the course are provided for you and any vessel you use during the course is yours to *keep. A Tallulah Rose apron is given to you on your first day of school and is yours to take away after you have completed the course. We have a wide range of books that you may borrow during your time with us and we don’t require that you buy any books ahead of your course however we do recommend The British Flowers book by Claire Brown. This book will become your flower bible and worth every penny – and no we’re not paid to say that! This book will help you to become familiar with not only flower names but their seasons too.

Week 1

As you’ll find with each week there is a lot to learn!  During your first week of the course we will focus on the seasonality of flowers and how to care and condition your flowers. Wastage control is important too especially if you’re planning on opening a retail store. Each day of your first week is a practical day, that means you get your hands on plants and flowers every day! Also during your first week we invite the fabulous Jessica Reeve to host a half day photography workshop for you all. Sharing her knowledge Jess ensures that you have the skills to take the best possible shots during your time with us. Remember these shots will form the beginnings of your portfolio.

You’ll create a number of sustainable floristry designs during you first week of flower school. To ensure you acquire the necessary skills to launch your business within a commercial and competitive environment we include the following designs;

  • Seasonal wreaths
  • Hand-tied bouquet
  • Low bowl arrangement
  • Flower meadow arrangement
  • Sympathy tributes
  • Low tablescape arrangement
  • Introduction to a large-scale installation

Costing each design is vital, if you don’t know what to charge how do you know where to start in making a successful business? We teach you a mathematical formula including all the elements required to make your design both competitive and profitable.

We begin talking about your vision for your future business about social media and how it can work for you. We familiarise ourselves with the industry at large and how, and where, we can buy flowers sustainably.

Week 2

Continuing into week two we build on the skills learned during week one and extend your knowledge to include wedding and event work. We begin the week by talking through wedding marketing, consultations and how to approach costings and quotations. We have developed a role play session so that you’re able to experience various consultation scenarios. We felt this would be to your advantage when heading into your first ‘real life’ consultation, however if you don’t wish to participate, only observe, that’s ok too! We then move on to practical hands on floristry covering;

  • Bridal bouquet
  • Flower crown
  • Buttonhole
  • Ceremony flowers
  • Table centre arrangments
  • Large urn arrangment
  • Flower arch
  • Floral cloud

Week 3

Stepping away from practical floristry we come together to discuss branding, ( a fun day of mood boards!) marketing, the how’s and why’s of social media and the legalities of launching your business. We walk you through setting up a business plan and discuss financing, how to forecast your outgoings as well as cashflow. Finally we bring all these aspects of business together within one coaching  session. The session, run by Crag and Crest, will help you to visualise, prioritise and realise!

  • Branding and mood boards
  • Customer profiling
  • Marketing
  • Social media
  • Photography workshop
  • Business plan
  • Legal structure
  • Accounting
  • Finance
  • Website workshop

Week 4

Your final week signals a return to hands-on floristry however not before designing your final three pieces in order that you can budget and order the flowers you require. Don’t be daunted we’ll guide you through the process from concept to execution, you’re not on your own!

We have a revision day during this week too, allowing you to practise skills learnt during the previous weeks that you feel you want to revisit.

Then before we launch head on into your final two days of school (when it’s over to you to show everyone what you’re made of) we whisk you into the magical topiary gardens here at Levens Hall including a delicious lunch prepared by the fabulous chefs at Levens Kitchen. The perfect day to practise our photography too.

Our final day brings celebration and graduation!
