Grower/Florist – Mill Stream Flowers

Sonia Ecclestone

Which course did you study at Tallulah Rose and when?
I did the Introduction to Floristry Course in 2014.

What did you enjoy most about the course?
I loved coming in to the school every morning to be surrounded by sumptuous flowers and it was great to be taught in such a relaxed way.

What was the most important thing that you learned during your time at school?
I most enjoyed being able to use my own creativity whilst also learning the more technical aspects of floristry. Rachel was such an inspirational teacher.

What was your first big break?
My first big break was growing my own flowers for a big birthday celebration. There were 4 big urns and 50 table top arrangements.

What’s been your highlight to date?
I now have a flower farm, Mill Stream Flowers. There is never a typical day other than early starts picking and conditioning for florists, endless watering and dead heading potting on etc. I love being in the field with my dogs and still can’t quite believe that I’m doing this.

The highlights are picking buckets of the most beautiful flowers and I’m thrilled when people are always so delighted with them.

What advice would you give to a new student starting out?
My advice to new students would be to have a clear idea of what you would like to achieve and realise that running your own business is really hard work.
